A group of unidentified gunmen have reportedly opened fire on a bus in Ghana's Upper East region, killing at least six people and injuring seven others. Hamza Amadu, town chief executive of Bawku, said the victims were attacked as they were traveling from Bawku, an urban community in the Upper East region, to a nearby market.

Amadu said the dead included two men and four women and the injured were being treated at two nearby hospitals. Security has been beefed up with military and police patrolling, while a curfew has also been imposed to control activities at night, the official said.

He said a joint police-military operation is underway to identify and arrest the perpetrators of the heinous crime. Located a few kilometers from the border with Burkina Faso, Bawku has recently been embroiled in armed unrest due to a long supremacy dispute and other criminal activities.
