U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on Thursday, gifting him a signed copy of his book 'Our Journey Together'. The two leaders shared a warm hug in the Oval Office before beginning their crucial discussions.
"I am delighted to see you back at the White House," PM Modi told President Trump, to which Donald Trump responded, "We missed you, we missed you a lot." Their meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter since Trump’s re-election, picking up their strong friendship where it had left off.
At a joint press conference, President Trump expressed his excitement, stating, "I am thrilled to welcome my friend Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India back to the White House," adding, "He is a special man." He also recalled the hospitality he and his wife Melania had received from PM Modi during their 2020 visit to India and noted his pleasure in reciprocating the warmth.
PM Modi’s visit comes shortly after President Trump’s inauguration, making him one of the first world leaders to meet with the newly elected U.S. president. Indian flags were displayed at the White House ahead of PM Modi's arrival, signaling the importance of the visit.
The Indian delegation included External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, and India’s Ambassador to the U.S. Vinay Mohan Kwatra. PM Modi and President Trump also discussed their recent phone calls from November 2024, and PM Modi’s previous visit in January 2025 when EAM Jaishankar attended Trump’s inauguration as his Special Envoy.
Prior to the White House meeting, PM Modi held separate discussions with U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Indian-origin entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard.
