Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the UN, has issued a strong warning to the globe on climate change. He stated, "The world community needs to make strong steps to address the climate catastrophe with major cities experiencing serious repercussions from increasing sea levels, such as Mumbai and New York." He asserted that "The future would be submerged by rising sea levels. An inherent concern is the rising in sea level."

At the UN Security Council discussion on "Sea level rise - Implications for international peace and security," Guterres remarked that sea level rise is "a cause of worry for the millions of people living in tiny island developing states and other low-lying places around the world." He emphasised how some low-lying villages and perhaps entire nations are in danger of going extinct due to increasing sea levels.

They claimed that since 1900, the average worldwide sea level has risen more quickly than it has in any other century in the last 3,000 years, and that the ocean has warmed more quickly than it has in any other century in the past 11,000 years. According to the World Meteorological Organization, even if global warming were "miraculously" kept to 1.5 degrees Celsius, sea level rise would still be substantial, according to Guterres.

Mega-cities on every continent, including Cairo, Lagos, Maputo, Bangkok, Dhaka, Jakarta, Mumbai, Shanghai, Copenhagen, London, Los Angeles, New York, Buenos Aires, and Santiago, will see major consequences, he said.

One in ten people on Earth live in coastal areas at low heights, which includes over 900 million people; some of these locations are already below sea level, the UN head emphasised. It has been noted that the average rate of rise has tripled.

Guterres informed the audience that the effects of rising waters are already generating new sources of instability and conflict. He also emphasised the need for the international community to take urgent action to address the climate issue, one of the main causes of rising seas.

"Homes are abandoned by their occupants. The UN head underlined that more must be done to defend the impacted citizens' fundamental human rights. The head of the UN stated that the Security Council is crucial in developing the political will required to handle the grave security issues brought on by rising sea levels. We must all continue to raise awareness of this crucial issue and support the lives, livelihoods, and communities of people who are experiencing this crisis firsthand.
