At least 11 people died and many others were injured as the tornado wreaked havoc in the US states of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The tornado destroyed several buildings, power and gas lines, and a fuel station, where many people were sheltering. A severe storm hit the states, where temperatures were extremely high. Texas' Cook County, north of Dallas, and Denton County were among the hardest-hit areas, where seven people died. Cook County Sheriff Ray Sappington told local media that authorities feared the death toll would rise.
Meanwhile, search and rescue operations are continuing and they are hopeful of finding survivors, he said. Footage on local media showed a fuel station almost completely destroyed, with metal twisted and vehicles damaged.
Two people were killed and six others were injured in Mayes County, Oklahoma. Two deaths have been reported in Arkansas, including a woman who was found dead in her dilapidated home.
Police officials in the city of Rogers, Arkansas, said they rescued several people who were trapped after the tornado downed trees and power lines and damaged gas supply lines. The tornado also affected surface traffic throughout Texas, overturning lorries and closing major highways, while several poles were uprooted, causing power outages. Officials said it may take several days to restore services. According to reports, after the destruction in three states, a threat warning was issued on Sunday due to severe weather in parts of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
