Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates All India Speakers’ Conference in Delhi

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated the two-day All India Speakers’ Conference at Delhi Assembly in the National Capital. The conference has been organised to commemorate the Centenary year of election of Vithalbhai Patel as the first Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly.

Speaking on the occasion, the Home Minister emphasized that like freedom of the country, it is equally important to run the country democratically after independence. He said, Vitthalbhai Patel did this work of laying the foundation of running the country democratically on the basis of Indian ideas.

Mr Shah also underscored the need to work towards enhancing the dignity of the House and respect of the post of the Speakers. He said the House should provide an unbiased platform to raise the issues of the people of our country. He said, it is the responsibility of every member to ensure that the functioning of the House is carried out as per the rules of the respective House.

Speaking on the occasion, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the two days Speakers' Conference is very useful to learn best practices. Mr Rijiju said that in a Parliamentary democracy, Parliament and Assemblies are the focal points and if both of them do not function properly, then questions will be raised on democracy.

He emphasized that the functioning of the Parliament and State Assemblies in a vibrant manner is very important. Mr Rijiju said that there is a difference between opposition and obstruction as Opposition is the right of the members but they cannot disrupt the functioning.

Delhi Lieutinant Governor V K Saxena and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Ministers of Delhi government and other dignitaries were also present.

Akashvani correspondent reports that this event brings together Speakers and Deputy Speakers of State Legislative Assemblies, as well as Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of State Legislative Councils.

The deliberations during two days event are expected to provide a meaningful platform for presiding officers to share experiences, exchange best practices, and explore new approaches for the functioning of legislatures.

With a special focus on digital innovations such as the AI-enabled tools, the Conference aims to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and responsiveness in lawmaking.

The Home Minister also inaugurated a special exhibition showcasing rare archival records, photographs, and documents on Vithalbhai Patel and the evolution of India’s parliamentary institutions was also inaugurated. A commemorative postage stamp based on his life was also released.
