US Secretary of State Marco Rubio began a diplomatic visit to India focused on strengthening bilateral and regional cooperation.
The top US diplomat arrived in New Delhi on a four-day diplomatic tour to hold key meetings aimed at boosting India-US ties.
Earlier, he visited Kolkata, where he paid a visit to the headquarters of the late Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity during his first trip to India since taking office.
The top US diplomat is scheduled to hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, later in the day.
Ways to bolster India-US ties in energy, trade, investment, critical technology and people-to-people ties exchanges are likely to dominate the talks.
The two sides are also expected to deliberate on the West Asia crisis and its economic impact including on energy supplies.
The visiting leader will be meeting External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Sunday, in addition to attending a meeting of the Quad foreign ministers in New Delhi on May 26.
