Rio de Janeiro, December 30, 2025 - The International Uranium Film Festival of Rio de Janeiro announces its 15th edition. As in previous years, this world's most renowned film festival about the atomic age will take place at the Cinematheque of Rio’s Modern Art Museum (MAM Rio), from May 21 to 30, 2026.

This time with the seal of approval from the Brazilian Rouanet Law. The Rouanet Law is Brazil's main instrument for supporting cultural events and art projects. It is a tax incentive law that allows companies and individuals in Brazil to invest their taxes in sponsoring cultural projects previously approved by the Ministry of Culture. Now, everyone in Brazil can become an official sponsor of the International Uranium Film Festival and reduce its taxes.

Founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2010, the festival is dedicated to all aspects of nuclear energy and radioactivity. In addition, in 2026, the Uranium Film Festival remembers two nuclear accidents: The 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which occurred on April 26, 1986, in the former Soviet Union. To this day, the reactor wreckage in Ukraine represents an ongoing radioactive threat to humanity.

Second, the disaster of Palomares, in southern Spain. Sixty years ago, on January 17, 1966, a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber carrying four nuclear H-bombs collided with another aircraft carrying kerosene and refueling the bomber in mid-air. The hydrogen bombs fell on earth near the village of Palomares, in the province of Almería. Although there was no nuclear explosion, two of the bombs fragmented, contaminating the region with highly toxic and radioactive plutonium. To this day, the region and its population suffer from this radioactive legacy.

Brazilian and international filmmakers and producers still can submit their films to this 15th edition of the world’s most famous atomic film festival through the Filmfreeway platform until January 17, 2026. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, other editions of the Uranium Film Festival are planned for next year in the USA (Chicago, Las Vegas, Window Rock, Los Angeles) and in Germany’s capital Berlin.

Since 2012, the festival has taken place not only annually in Rio de Janeiro, but also worldwide. Over the past 15 years, screenings have been organized in more than 60 cities in 9 countries, mainly in Germany and the United States, in important cities such as Berlin, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In 2024, the IUFF was named one of the "25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World" by Hollywood's MovieMaker magazine. And in 2025, the festival's founders, Márcia Gomes de Oliveira and Norbert Suchanek, received the prestigious "Nuclear-Free Future Award" in New York in the category education.
