Bathinda, November 6: The Department of Biochemistry, under the leadership of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organized a seminar titled “Thrombosis and Heart Health: Research to Awareness” on November 6, 2025, to mark the observance of World Thrombosis Day, which is globally celebrated on October 13 each year. The observance was initiated by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) to spread awareness about the prevention and treatment of thrombotic disorders.
The seminar featured two eminent experts in the field of thrombus biology and cardiovascular medicine. The Keynote Speaker, Dr. Sanjana Dayal, Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine (Hematology, Oncology, Blood and Marrow Transplantation), University of Iowa, USA, delivered a lecture on “Platelet: A Cellular Bridge between Prediabetes and Thrombosis.” She comprehensively discussed the intricate link between prediabetes and thrombotic diseases, highlighting current research trends and findings.
The Expert Speaker, Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology, AIIMS Bathinda, delivered a talk on “Thrombosis: The Clinical Perspective.” He elaborated on the fundamentals of thrombosis, its clinical manifestations, modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, and diagnostic approaches. He also discussed various antiplatelet and antithrombotic therapies, supported by recent clinical case studies, and shared practical health tips for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
The event was graced by the presence of Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor; Prof. R.K. Wusirika, Dean Incharge Academics; Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, Dean Students Welfare; Dr. Monisha Dhiman, Director IQAC; Dr. Baljinder Singh, Head, Department of Biochemistry; Prof. Anil Kumar Mantha; and Dr. Sunil Kumar Singh, Convenor of the event. Faculty members from the Departments of Biochemistry, Zoology, and Microbiology also attended the programme.
The session began with a plant-watering ceremony, followed by a welcome address by Prof. R.K. Wusirika, who emphasized the global importance of World Thrombosis Day and the role of academic platforms in promoting health awareness.
After the expert talks, students and faculty members actively participated in a Q&A session with the speakers. The event also included two student competitions: a Quiz on “Thrombosis: Basics, Control and Prevention”, which saw participation from around 45 students, and a Poster Competition on the theme “From Head to Toe, Take Control: Prevent Thrombosis, Protect Your Health,” with participation from more than 10 students. Winners of both competitions were felicitated with prizes and certificates.
In his vote of thanks, Dr. Sanjeev Thakur, Dean Students Welfare, appreciated the efforts of the Department of Biochemistry and highlighted the significance of such initiatives in enhancing public understanding of cardiovascular health and disease prevention.
