CU Punjab celebrates National Mathematics Day with expert talk and competitions

Bathinda, February 5: The Central University of Punjab, through its Department of Mathematics and Statistics, organized National Mathematics Day Celebrations to honour the legacy of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The two-day programme, held under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, featured academic, creative, and competitive events aimed at fostering mathematical thinking and innovation among students.

The key highlight of this included an expert lecture under the Aryabhata Lecture Series, delivered by Prof. Ashish Arora, Director, Amritsar Campus, I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University, on the topic “Indians’ Contribution to the World of Mathematics.” In his address, Prof. Arora highlighted India’s rich and often underrepresented mathematical heritage, emphasizing the contributions of eminent mathematicians such as Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskaracharya, and Madhava of the Kerala School. He explained how Indian mathematics integrated logic, intuition, experimentation, and poetic expression, laying early foundations of algebra, calculus, trigonometry, infinite series, and number theory—centuries before similar developments in the West. He also underscored the importance of objective historical analysis and advocated the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems into contemporary education, in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

As part of the celebrations, a series of student competitions were organized on February 4, 2026, including Rubik’s Cube Solving, Sudoku, Treasure Hunt, Speech, and Meme competitions under the theme “Mathemania.” Students participated enthusiastically, demonstrating strong problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning, and creativity. Winners were awarded pooled cash prizes worth ₹5100. Shristi Kumari (Microbiology) secured first prize in the Sudoku competition, Paarth Sharma (Education) won the Rubik’s Cube Solving competition, Shivam and Tushar (Microbiology) emerged winners in the Treasure Hunt, Ayushi Mishra secured first position in the Speech competition, and Santosh won the Meme competition.

On this occasion Dr. Sachin Kumar, Head, Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics, expressed gratitude towards the invited speaker and thanked participants for making this event a grand success. Faculty members and students from across departments attended the programme in large numbers, making the National Mathematics Day celebrations at CU Punjab both intellectually enriching and engaging.
