UWE Bristol's expanding BA(Hons) Film Studies programme combines critical and industry-focused approaches, exploring the cultural role of cinema. In addition to the academic study of film, the degree incorporates practical elements of professional writing, festivals and curation.
You have a wide-ranging interest in film and will join a well-established and collegial team of six, supported by administrators, library services and technical staff.
Initially, you will deliver existing undergraduate modules, including Film Style and Meaning (first year) and Screen Representations: Difference and Diversity (second year), supervise third-year projects/dissertations and act as an Academic Personal Tutor.
In your second year, you will take on Programme Leader responsibilities, enabling your professional development and help shape the future of the degree. This will include contributing to curriculum development and designing new research-led modules.
You have a growing track-record of research outputs and knowledge exchange activities. You will become part of the Faculty's Moving Image Research group (MIRGe), an interdisciplinary group focusing on historical, theoretical and practice-based research into screen cultures, production and education.
About you:
You have experience of teaching Film Studies in higher education contexts and a growing research profile. As part of a small teaching team, you will have excellent collaborative skills and be willing to take on new challenges in a supportive environment.
You have the flexibility to teach beyond your own research specialisms and to take on new areas of teaching where needed. You will have experience of leading, designing and delivering modules, taking student diversity and inclusivity into account, and working towards decolonising the curriculum.
You will have experience of designing and marking a range of assessment types, including digital formats such as video essays, live and recorded presentations/pitches, blogs and/or websites as well as essays, case studies, and dissertations. For this reason, you will need strong digital technology skills (e.g., editing software, website and digital content production, and/or technology enhanced learning).
Our course encourages students to combine academic, creative and professional practice, so some experience of teaching professional skills in writing (e.g., screenwriting or film criticism), film programming and curation is desirable.
You show ambition in your ideas for the development of the programme, including commitment to UWE's core values. You show leadership potential and project management skills, through programme leading or other activities, such as group research projects, network development, professional partnerships and/or knowledge exchange.
You have a good record of research, publications and other outputs, and be familiar with external funding opportunities and processes. You have clear plans for future projects and the development of your national/international profile. You will become a member of MIRGe, which supports moving image research and is committed to engaging with communities in the city, region and beyond.
